C4 Pan leak
« on: July 12, 2009, 09:57:19 PM »
Hey,
I have been fighting a leak that will not quit, I am sure it is coming from the gasket this is what I have tried:
1. Poly gasket without sealant
2. Poly gasket with sealant.
3. Cork gasket without sealant.
4. New pan with poly gasket black RTV
5. Checked the tranny casting, it is flush and smooth.

There has to be a way to seal this thing !!!!! HELP !! HELP !!!

You haven't got that leak fixed yet?  Did you replace the "0" ring at the dipstick tube?  Did you replace the "0" ring at the kickdown shaft?  Did you use vaseline when you put the "0" ring in?
Another thing you might consider if indeed the leak is coming from your pan gasket are those load bearers that you find on older engine valve covers.  They are a flat piece of metal with a hole in the middle that fits into the groove of the pan and puts pressure on a much larger space than the bolt alone.   Like these guys. http://www.jegs.com/p/Trans-Dapt/Hamburgers-Oil-Pan-Load-Spreaders/832538/10002/-1
Tighten to 12 lbs only.  And, make sure your bolts are not too long so that you can actually get 12 lbs tightening on the pan.  Someone could have replaced those bolts with longer ones back in the day.  Who knows?

Glen,

I did not replace any "O" rings yet, Although there maybe a little fluid film around those areas no dripping, the main leak seems to be around the gasket. I am letting the car sit so its not blowing around just straight drips off the pan and around a few back bolts. A transmission shop recommended trying an aluminum pan, thicker flange and will not warp. Are you talking 12 inch pounds or foot pounds? This problem is driving me crazy.....

Double the gasket and put black RTV on all sides.   Put the RTV around the hole where the bolt goes in.   Let the RTV set for 30 minutes or so until it gets tacky.   Make damn sure your bolts aren't too long so they bottom out before the pan is on tight.   Other than that, the aluminum pan thing may be the only answer.

What is the Fram air filter to use with the 65 high-performance v8 engine?  Thanx.

The answer is to not use anything with FRAM written on it.
