9" center section removal
« on: October 24, 2010, 03:08:34 PM »
Does anyone have any tricks to remove a stuck 9" center section from the housing?  The axles, bolts and copper washers have been removed but it just won't let go.  I've beat the crap out of it with a rubber mallet and it still won’t budge.  The housing is still under the car, not on the bench.  :-\
Thanks!!

Welcome, under duress.
Put a jack under the u-joint and lift SLOWLY. This should pull the lower lip of the section up. Back off when the car starts to raise. With a solid hammer (not - rubber, the section is iron) give it some "help".

That did it!  A four pound sledge and a 4 foot long 2x4 to transfer the shock.
Thanks Jim!!
