73 fuel tank
« on: March 03, 2011, 10:25:41 PM »
I just received my new fuel tank for my 73 mach1 and noticed that there are three holes in it.  One for the filler neck and one for the sending unit but what's the third one for?  The sending unit goes into the side and the filler is on the back but this other directly on top.  Is it as simple as some sort of drain hole?

this is the fuel tank what is the upper hole for

Thanks for looking

There is a hole on the top of your tank it is for the fuel vapor separator. So your tank should have 3 openings, filler, vent, and gauge.

Ok, so I should just use the old vent then.  I guess I will find out when I drop the old tank.

Thanks for the info

The vent is in the center of the tank. I'm actually thinking about using the line or running a line in the vent line location to replace the fuel line location. The vent runs down the driveshaft hump the fuel line runs down the driverside of the car. Im thinking about ending the vent line at near the tank maybe on the top of it and running the fuel supply line in the drive shaft hump. Gotta get a tank. Thats about the only part left on my car thats stock.

Do not run your fuel line down the driveshaft tunnel.  In the event of a U-Joint failure, you could have a severed fuel line (even with a driveshaft safety loop) and sparks and hot exhaust and possible severed and shorted wiring all in the same place.

I enjoy your posts so don't do something that could leave you burnt to a crisp.

Well It hangs along the side of the car and because I've replaced my floor on the drivers side it isnt very secure there. They run the brake line down the tunnel so it cant be that bad in there.. I'll think about it. Be awhile before I get to that project anyway.. Maybe I'll just find a way to secure it tighter.

well if it a brake line is cut you will have problems, but not a fire.  Remember the old brake systems are split so you would only lose rear brakes if the lines were cut in the tunnel.  I am fairly certain a fuel line relocated to the tunnel would fail tech at any racetrack for safety issues and while you may never race the car, U-joints can and do fail.

I"m with Jeff on this.  Although the fact that brake fluid is still flammable it takes far more heat to ignite and there is less brake fluid in the car versus fuel.
