69 mustang power steering
« on: February 24, 2008, 11:05:48 AM »
My 69 many yrs ago had power steering,0ne of hoses ruptured so I took drive belt off the
pumpso not to burn up pump till I could replace the hose.Anyhow when Id get to 30 mph
it vibrate so as to almost yank the steering wheel out my hands. Was this because
there was no presure at power assist cylinder?

Clay,
A couple of questions: did the viabrations start when the power steering was disabeled? What engine? What happens at higher speeds (if you got the nerve to go faster)?
Things to check: jack up one side of the front end (keep one wheel on the ground) and see if there is any play in the wheels (bad bearings), ball joints or tie rod ends. Spin both wheels and eyeball the rotation. You also may have lost a wheel weight?
Power steering may dampen some of the effects of front end viabration, but not as what you are describing.

I checked all that you listed and when I replaced the hose it ok.3512v power front disc
brakes. It was a long time ago and was just curieus.Every time I think about that poor
car that comes to mind.Oh btw it would stop after 35mph and higher it smooth out so it
wes real hard to do the speed limit ;D Yes it started when the p/s was disabled.
Thanks

Clay,
I would look a getting the wheels ballanced. That's all I can think of.

So, you are saying that when you put the power steering unit belt back on, the low speed vibration stopped altogether.  Weird.  Weird indeed.  That doesn't even make sense.

Yes it did,the p/s was operated by a hydrolic cylinder attached to the frame and pittman
arm.Not sure if that is correct terminoligy, but the hoses did not go to just the gear box.
Like I said it was a long time ago.Early Granadas had the same set up.Worked in a Ford
shop for couple yrs before I went into construction.

I guess with no pressure on the arm, it was jerking back and forth or something.  I have no idea what was happening.  Just keep a belt on there and enjoy the ride.
