67 mustang rear end oil
« on: August 16, 2005, 07:02:15 AM »
I have just purchased a 67 mustang fastback.  Was a factory 289 2 barrell car with a 3 speed standard tranny.  Not sure what rear end is in it, but it  looks like a welded seal from the back side.  My problem is  the car sat for 3 years and I just got it running and the rear end started leaking a puddle of oil.  How do I check this and what kind of oil do i use?  thanks in advance

welcome to the site......
there should be a pug on the pumpkin that you can open up. when you take the plug off oil should come out, if not fill until it does, just use good gear lube ,like lucas or amsoil. but pensiol and others work good also. I believe in only useing the best oils. I would change the seal ,very easy to do.
Just take the rear U joints of and drop the axle but do not pull out of the transmission unless you wanna clean up 5 quarts of tranny fliud . take about 12 bolts off the pumpkin and use  rubber mallet and hit it of. that easy...
