66 voltage regulator
« on: January 21, 2010, 06:24:53 AM »
Any tips on how to check if the volt. Regulator is working properlly? When my car is running the lights ever so slightly flicker a little bit brighter and then dim a bit? I have a repro autolite from cj pony parts. It is about a year old. Is there a better or other brand from an autoparts store that I can just replace with and maybe be more reliable? Thanks

First, check all the grounds, alternator to engine, engine to body (at the firewall), lights to radiator support. Then verify the voltage at the battery when the engine is running, lights on and off.

headlight switches go bad as well and are fairly cheap and easy to replace.  If you haven't replaced the headlight switch, it is a good idea.

As far as brands go, go to a Ford dealership and get a Motorcraft VR from their parts place.  Autolite and Motorcraft are the same brand, so I'm inclined to think your VR is OK , just check those grounds really well.   Like Jim said, check the voltage of your battery, but you can also check the output of  the VR at the alternator.
