66 mustang non-gt fog light install.
« on: December 06, 2008, 10:29:59 PM »
Hey guys, ready to install my new fog light kit from cj's on my 66 coupe. On GT factory optioned vehicles, the grill was all black instead of having the horizontal chrome like trim. I have a non-gt, and i think that the light kit with the chrome trim in the background create a very bussy look. I what to black out my grill. What spray paint off the shelf should i use? would krylon work, and should it be flat or semi black???
Thanks, mike

I recomend using a satin black or semi-gloss black in that order. Flat black just don't look right. Remove the grill, wipe down the outer edges with lacquer thinner and spray away. Krylon is as good as any spray paint. Remember, all those exposed small hex head attaching screws are cad/zinc plated and that makes a nice finishing touch.

You could paint it any style of black you want, but I agree with Jim.  My 65 was originally painted with a color of black called Argent I think.  It is a dark gray color.  Hey, that 66 coupe didn't come with fog lights anyway, so why worry about a small thing like what color of black to use on the grill?   ;D ;Send us some pics when you finish the project.  In fact, why not take some pics as you put it together and do a write-up so I can include that in the FAQ of the classic section so other folks can benefit from your project?

All 65 grills were painted with a blue-gray (sort of) shade of paint. The brackets at the ends to the headlight bucket were painted black on all. For the grills that had fog lamps, GT equipped cars just used this option, the fog lamp support brackets were also black. All the attaching rivets were not painted. A 66 non-fog lamp grilll is the same as a GT grill except that all the chrome bars were painted black. The rivets on the end brackets were painted black.
