Topic: 66 coupe holes for grease fittings in wheel wells!

Hi Gang:
Bet you have heard this one before. Someone talked the original owner into cutting holes in the front wheel wells (very sloppy ones) for access to the upper grease fittings. I would sure like to hear some recommendations on how to make this situation look better short of welding on patches. Holes are oval abt 1 inch wide by 2 inches long and ragged!  TIA.

You will either need to patch those holes by welding patches from underneath, then grinding down the edges and adding a smooth sheet of bondo, sanding, then priming and painting; or buying a new inner fender.  You are kinda lucky.  Most idiots bored holes in the shock towers.  All it takes are some 90 degree grease zerks to solve the problem.

I think he means the shock towers. The best way is to draw a pattern and cut patch pieces from some 0.093 in thick steel. Grind them to fit. The next steps are the hard ones, engine removal and welding in the patches. If you don't have a welder, try www.harborfreight.com then you will need to learn to weld if you don't know how. Eastwood www.eastwood.com has retainers to facilitate holding the patches in place while welding.

Yeah, most likely  Jim.  I have never heard of anyone accessing the grease zerks on the upper arm through the inner fender.  If he replies for the 2nd time, I will be surprised.  Most of these first time posters never respond.

However, if he does respond, the shock towers can be repaired much the same way I described for the innner fender, or you can drill out the welds on the shock towers and replace them.  Either way, welding skills is a must.

Yep my mistake it is the shock towers, sorry. Thanks for you responses gents. I sure dont want to do any welding, these holes must have been in there for at least 30 years so dont think the strength is in question, I just wanted it to look fairly decent under the hood. Thanks again.

If you are willing to live with those holes, then so be it.  At least you are aware of the procedure of how to repair the damage if you so desire.

Thanks once again Soaring and Jim, sorry for not wanting to be a purest, I just thought there was some kind of plug that was common for this problem. Well at least I am not a "first time poster" now. Thanks again and you are right if some day I want to repair the damage, I know how.
