Topic: 66 cooling system upgrade

I want to upgrade the stock cooling system on my 66 Mustang running a mild 289 with an automatic trans. The system is the original with a rad replacement or two over the years. I want to get in start the car and cruise without worrying about overheating. Too old for that sitting by the road BS. I also may add an AC in a couple of years.

The plan:
Install a Champion 3 row AL rad #259CC
Install an electric fan & shroud #FS339
Replace the water pump with a Meziere electric water pump #MEZ-WP111 at 35 GPM

My questions:
Is this an overkill?
Any other options?

Start off with a three row radiator, a fan shroud, a five blade fan, flush the engine and use a 50/50 mix of anti-freeze. Glen also recomends Water Wetter as a cooling aid. Anything more as you listed, gets you into reliability problems as well as a potential drive belt problem for the alternator.
You may consider using a 1968 fan spacer with the three row radiator as it is shorter than the stock 66 spacer (and four shorter bolts). The four stock fan shroud brackets used with a three row radiator may be a bit (3/8 inch) too long so they will have to be "modified".

To add to what Jim has said, I would also add an overflow tank.  I also concur that using a 5 blade regular fan is superior to an electric fan because the electric will put pressure on the amperage needed to run it, so you would have to do some upgrades to your electric system.  I have the 4 row rad, 5 blade fan, shroud, and overflow tank and my 65 289 runs cool as a cucumber with kthe air on.   I also run a 180 degree cap.  I flush my system once a year in the spring and do not use any acid based cleaner.  Just plain water.

Thanks for the feedback guys, that's what I needed. The tips sound like they will take care of my problems safely and save some $$$ to boot. I'll let you know how it works next spring when I get the car back from the shop. . . .
