65 Mustang leaf springs
« on: May 31, 2005, 11:03:16 PM »
I just purchased a 64 1/2 mustang convertible that came with 15/7 tires. One of the wheels when you go over a bump rubs against the inside fender. I have notice that the rear of the car sits a little lower than the front. My question is should I replace the leaf springs, and/or shocks? Someone also suggested installing air bags just to raise it slightly.  Comments?

Thanks,

If they still sell shocks with spring assist that would be my first choice.  Ditto air shocks--Replacing springs on a car that old is a job for a spring shop and would not be cheap.  I speak from experience.

Your problem is your tires and wheels are too big.
The solutions are:
- Replace the wheels with some 14 inch rims and some narrower rubber.
- Replace the springs on the front with 620 to 650 lb types and the rears with competition or something stiffer than stock.
Front spacers and rear shackle extensions only lead to trouble. Keep in mind that your car is over 40 years old, was designed by Ford to last 10 and is in need of some upkeep.

Yeah, your tires are most likely too wide, but before you buy new tires, put on a new set of reverse eye leaf springs and a new set of KYB shocks.  If that fixes it, fine, but if that doesn't, then get a skinnier tire.  DO NOT put on air shocks.  Where the shocks hook up on top is a thin piece of metal, and if you have the shock too stiff, it will punch through and ruin it.  DO NOT use extension shackles.  They will make your rear end very unstable and you will wind up in a ditch or worse.

Actually, replacing the rear leaf springs is not rocket science and anyone with the slightest amount of mechanical know-how can do it.  The problem lies in the fact that 9 times out of 10 either one or both of the front bolts will be rusted and frozen so it can't just be taken out like a regular bolt.  The bolt has to be cut out.  I used a recip saw, and others have used cutting torches to air grinders.  But, at any rate, be prepared to have to cut out the bolt.
