65 Ford Mustang horn problem
« on: June 16, 2009, 07:31:56 AM »

65 Ford Mustang convertible.

My horn does not work. I tested it by running a jump wire from the horn to the battery and the actual horn works so I assume the problem is in the steering wheel. Also, my turn signals work but have to be shut off manually. They don't "click" off automatically after you make a turn. Somebody told me these two problems could be related and have something to do with the steering wheel being put on wrong.

Can anybody help me fix this? I need to get an inspection sticker by the end of the month and the horn will be a problem.

Thanks!

as for the signal problem it sounds like it might be your turn signal cam, which isnt a big fix. just a plastic piece you can get at a parts store for about 10-15 dollars. as for the horn it sounds like maybe a grounding issue, you'll have to remove the steering wheel for these two problems but neither should be too hard.

Your horn ring is not making contact with the ends of the wires, so you are not making contact with ground.   The easiest way to solve this problem is to take off your horn ring, and get an old (or new) glass tube fuse and break out the glass.  Now, with the two metal round and hollow ends, slip them over the ends of the contact points. That will take back the eroded space, and the ring will now make contact.  Sometimes this method works, and other times it doesn't.  If it doesn't, you are out the cost of a fuse and an interesting experience in how your horn works.  If it does, you have fixed your horn for about a quarter.  Don't get frustrated.  If you need for it to be inspected and your horn still doesn't work, just get a push button horn contact from the parts store and mount that on the steering column temporarily.  There is no law that says the origingal horn has to work.  That will buy you time to do it right, and replace the entire wiring system for the horn.

I had the same problem with my turn signals and got the cam repair kit which fixed the problem but gave me a new one.  The cam has so much spring that when I finish a right turn, it jumps all the way back to a left turn and I have to manually kick it back to home.  I tried fixing this a couple more times with no success and decided I was better off doing it manually all the time than half the time after a right turn otherwise I'd forget and drive around like I was turning left all the time.

Don't know if I ll make a new thread
Got the same problem - horn doesn't work
But it's a 64 1/2
I think it should have a horn relay
I tried the same thing with testing the passenger side horn with a wire from the battery
All that happened was that smoke came out of the horn
No signal
Now I guess this one is done
I'm afraid to try it with the other horn
Can I damage it, too ?
I also replaced the horn contact spring in the steering wheel
No signal - anyone has ideas ?
Thanks , I am from Germany - do sorry for the mistakes in English
Marcel
