65 bench seat - upholstery options?
« on: November 25, 2007, 10:55:07 PM »
I just purchased a 65 coupe with a factory bench seat.  The car has changed colors during it's lifetime and now the red interior is white (not mustang upholstery, probably Tijuana) and the body is metallic blue (also not a standard color) instead of wimbledon white.  I want to change the interior because it looks cheap and the paint isn't real special either.  I like the Pony upholstery, but don't believe it was ever available for the bench seat.   The white headliner is nice and I've thought about leaving it in place.  The red interior isn't exactly my style, so I've thought about toning it down and going with a two tone seat of red with white inserts.  If I could get the running horses, I'd probably go with the solid red seatcovers.  Does anyone make a two tone bench seat cover?  Or does anyone make the pony seat covers for a bench?  Would the purists shoot me for doing such a thing?  I'm not going for concours, just want a decent little daily driver.  I'm new here so cut me a little slack.

Welcome here Larry. Nothing is impossible to do and any upholstery shop can create what you ask but I don't think you can get replacement pony seat covers for a bench. Your Mustang might loose it's value if it's not stock but you are the owner and nobody will shoot you if it's not original  ;)
The bench seats for 1965 did come with two tone colors as you can see below:
Parchment w/blue, bench C2
Parchment w/Burgundy, bench C3
Parchment w/Emberglo, bench C4
Parchment w/black, bench C6
Parchment w/Aqua, bench C7
Parchment w/Ivy Gold, bench C8

Here is a list of seat covers available for bench seats at
RestoreMustangs.com
You can call MustangDepot.com, RestoreMustangs.com or any other Mustang parts store, they will certainly be more helpful than me.

Good luck and let us know what you decide and be welcome to show us your ride :)

Maybe I just need to see an example of the red interior in person to get a feel for how it would look.  Stock would still probably be the best all around option.

It's hard to visualize a red interior when the body is blue instead of white like it is supposed to be.   Red, white, and blue, while patriotic sounds really ugly.

Right now it's a 50 footer.  Looks pretty good from a distance, just don't get too close where you can see the white vinyl interior with blue stitching and black piping.  Or the maroon overspray under the blue, with touches of white for good measure.  Or the blue dash with the red scratches.

I'll try to get some pictures up soon.

Did you think about painting an American flag on the hood or the roof?   :D
I love the red interiors when the outside colors are white or red but I agree that blue and red together might look very nice.
Do you know what color the interior was when the car left the factory?
Here is some photos of red interiors I have found.
The last one is with bench seats.
