65 A code not starting when cold?
« on: June 30, 2006, 09:07:21 AM »
I have a 65 A code convertible with 5700 miles since the engine was rebuilt. When the car was cold and had been sitting in the garage for a day or two, I would press the gas pedal once all the way and release, and the car would start pretty mutch right away. Once the car was warm, there was no need to press the gas pedal. Lately, I press the gas pedal once when cold just as i've always have, and it takes me about 3 times of turning the ignition before the car starts. When warm it still starts on the first try.
Any idea of what the problem might be? Also, should I use premium or regular gas?
Thank you for your help, Mike from Miami

I can't help with the first part of your question because Im in the same boat.

As for the gas question I can.  First of does the car knock or ping?
if the answer is no then you don't have to run the high octane gas.

I work in a lad for a local oil refinery and I asked our lab manager the same question and he said if its not then no.  If it pings then yes.  Thats all octane is.  A anti knock additive.

is in manuel or electric choke. It might need adjusted or you could be running a little rich. if you run rich it will put too much gas on the plug when you shut the car off unitl it gets hot enough . take the plugs out to  check the color.

when I raced quads I would check my plugs by running it in third gear and shut it down at 3rd gear and coast to a stop to see how the plug looks while under a load . some people would check at idle but its not accurate. thats why dyno tuning is the best way to go.

I fixed the problem! My carb is a 4 barr. Autolite. I replaced the carb. diafram that links the gas pedal assembly to the carb. I had a small gas leak from that area on the carb from not running the car as mutch as i should have. The old diafram had dried-out, thence not shotting and opening in order to activate fuel flow.
Thank you all for your help
