I'm not sure if I want to race it yet. I think it'll just be a cruiser for now. I mainly just want to finish it and drive it.

Then just replace the old rubber bushings with new rubber bushings.  You can always put the polyeurathane bushings in when you decide to hop up the car for racing and you have a little more jingle in your pocket.

That's what I was thinking.  I was looking at getting a pair of 195 in/lb 5 leaf rear springs, will these be too stiff? (note: I also want a little stiffer in the front)

thanks for answering my questions I'm not so keen about these old cars because I grew up in the 90's.

for bushings find the moog thermoplastic bushings-stiff like poly without the noise.

195# rear springs will lift the rear but they are a bit stiff with the light ass end of a mustang-I'm running them and am happy, but it depends on what you want.

Big soft tires will dampen that out  45 series 17 upgrades and you will feel the bumps and expansion joints and bugs you run over.

I don't  plan on going any bigger than a 15 inch wheel, any suggestions on the front stiffness if I do run 195's in the back.

600's at least. I'll put heavier in mine when I get to changing anything up front.  The 600's I have now are pretty well matched to the 200 rears.

But that is just me and may not be what is best for your driving

I think I'll just redo the backs with 195's for now and see what it drives like with the front coils that are in there.

Thanks

You most likely will find that your front coils are just fine. I replaced my  67's rear springs with factory spec new replacements along with KYB gas shocks all the way around. Took the rear sag out and brought her up nice high and level. The shocks alone brought the rear up almost another inch. I put a new set of 15" wheels and T/A's she drives like a dream, rides a little stiff but not unbearable.
