428 swap in 351 69 mustang
« on: April 26, 2009, 08:22:20 PM »
I am installing a 428 PI in 69 Mach 1 winsor car.  Looking for any suggestions or info that may be available.  Thanks

Do you have deep pockets?
Why are you doing this swap?
Parts needed: exhaust manifolds or headers, engine mounts, radiator, hoses, springs, transmission (4 speed add even more money for parts) driveshaft, a bunch of linkage parts for the tranny and that's just to start.
You can make more power and be lighter with the 351W for far cheaper than adding the 428PI with all the headaches you will encounter..

To late, I am deep into the swap.  Bought a set of hooker headers that will not fit, so considering exhaust manifolds.  Had a lot of problems with the motor mounts, but got it worked out. It has been very frustrating.

As you know there are 2 style of motor mounts and you can make the small block mounts work if you drill new holes and this is just for the mounts that are attached to the lower shock tower and not the ones connected to the block.
With my car to get it back to original I had to piece all the 390 4spd parts which are nearly identical to the 428 stuff and as you know now gets very pricey.
Does your PI have the aluminum intake?
How many bolt holes are there for your exhaust manifolds?
Do you have power steering? Different hoses for the big block cars and a different mount on the frame.
Which hooker headers did you buy? The 428 exhaust manifolds flow pretty good and they fit much better than the hookers. FPA and JBA sell better fitting headers.
Mansfield Mustang has a ton of FE stuff if you check out their website.
Good luck with the swap.

Do you need any parts?

We did get the motor mts adjusted. My PI does have the aluminum intake.  The heads came with 8 bolts, but were machined to take 16, so hopefully the manifolds will work with no problem.  I am sending the headers back to Summit today.  The two center bolts on the passenger side were not drilled correctly along with other fitting problems.  They were the competition plus headers.  I will visit the Mansfield web site.  My car does have power steering.  I really hope this all comes together very soon.  The headers have held me up for nearly 2 months.
