I pay no attention to inital. 36 degrees all in by 3000. I'm running an MSD pro billet distributor with the blue and silver spring and the red stop bushing. I have closed chambered 4v heads opens may experiance detonation with that much timing.

Make sure your advance curve is fully in by 3000 rpm and at that point you are at 36 degrees. Thats the part of timing that maters. initial is really irrelevent. As long as you can start it ...

Are the wires on the distributor well spaced? Its common for guys to cross the 2 facing thee front of the distribtor. Sounds like a minor wireing problem to me.

Check your vacuum hoses, and tweak the idle adjustment screws.

i tried all that and it still is backfireing when you floor it.     but i have another question- my friend has a 1967 mustang 6 cylinder, he bought a 302 for it and he just found out the motor mounts dont fit on a mustang that comes with the 6 cylinder the frame is smaller.  he is wondering if anyone has put a 302 in a a 6 cylinder 67 mustang. and what you have to do to make it work?

thanks

Then your timing is still not right.  All mustangs of the same year had the same engine compartment.  The 6 cylinder motor mounts are different from the 302's though.

he bought motor mounts for a 302 . they are just to big for the frame.

the guy at napa said the 6 cylinder cars are made lighter.

The NAPA guy doesent have a clue. They didnt make special frames for 6-8 cylinder cars and thousands of people have jettesoned the 6 for a V8. Your guy probably got the wrong mount. That NAPA guy probably did it. NAPA parts guys have really gone down hill lately i've noticed. Used to be they had guys who knew car parts but not any more you gotta know what you want right down to the part number when you go in there.

You noticed that too, huh?  Yeah, the clerks who work in the auto parts places are just dumbassed kids who only can maybe work a computer to find a part,  They have never had grease under their fingernails,.
