I am thinking of putting a new set of heads on my 68 302 and I am considering a set of 351w DOOE with a 4100 autolite and the proper intake, I am keeping the stock cam for now. I am wondering if anybody has something similar to this , who can tell me they opinion, or someone with enough knowledge, I am also adding a set of 355 gears.
Interesting concept, but there are several questions you need to address:
- A set of "D0OE" heads (there are two variations, a "-C" and a "-G") have a chamber volumn of 60.4cc, stock 68 302 heads are 63cc so you increase the compression ratio, and the intake and exhaust valves are larger. So far a positive, I believe the problem is the stock intake manifold not mating, a possible difference in gaskets and head bolts.
- Which 4100 carburetor are you considering, the 480cfm or the 600cfm? The difference is best defined as venturi diameter, 1.08 vs. 1.12. The Autolite 4100 is an excellent carburetor: simple, efficient, economic, reliable.
- You got all that good air/gas mixture on the top, but getting it into the cylinders and there you fall flat. You don't "breathe". A cam is a big deal and would be best thing to do at the time the heads went on.
- Now, how do you get all that "exploded" air/gas mixture out? No headers in the plan?
- A set of 3.55:1 gears are fine. What transmission modifications?
My recomendations:
- Rework the 302 heads (install bigger valves, shave 0.030 of the mating surface, polish ports). You will probably need to rebuild the 351W heads anyway.
- Put in a cam.
- Add headers and a dual exhaust system.
- Install a high rise manifold and an Autolite 4100 1.12 type carburetor.
- Convert the distributor to a Pertronix II type.
- Gear selection is ok, but do them last.
