« on: February 11, 2008, 08:20:43 PM »
I have a 1967 mustang and the steering wheel has some play in it ( left to right )...not sure how to adjust this..it has power steering and looks like it has a new ball stud assembly installed...does anyone know how to adjust to remove the steering wheel play ?
thank you.

Welcome to the site Poikusr. I don't think you can adjust a play in the steering and I am afraid you will need to replace the steering box or other worn suspension component. The tech experts here will tell you more but by laying under the car and have someone move the steering wheel, you will be able to see where the play comes from.

You can adjust the slop in the steering box on a 67. First, make sure that you problem is not in the ball joints, tie rod ends, wheel bearings or even a frame problem. The adjustment is best done by someone who has done it before but if you are into a bit of masochism, get a copy of a 67 Ford Car Shop Manual. You may need a special large wrench.

If it's an early 67 with a 19.9 ratio box, you can tighten your steering box and maybe that will help.   The later 67's had a 16.1 ratio box, and may be different in how they are adjusted. Turn your steering wheel all the way to the left, then pop the hood.  Locate the steering box and you will see a nut on top of it with a slotted bolt through the nut.  Loosen the nut and turn that slotted bolt in until you feel it rub on the steering linkage.  Don't get it too tight.  Just barely rubbing.  Then tighten down the nut and you are good to go.  If that doesn't do the job, then you will need to order a new one from places like Flaming River.  Now, this is assuming all the other steering components are good to go.
