What is the correct shoe size for front/rear drum brakes on 66 L6 convertible? I'm not sure if the rear is 1 1/2 or 2 1/4. I've seen 1 1/2 listed on some sites and 2 1/4 listed on others. The front is 2 1/4.

The shoes are identical for convertibles FROM THE FACTORY at 9 by 2 1/4 inch for I6 engines (note, no 'L' head engines in Mustangs), Ford p/n C4DZ-2001-A. This does not take into account 42 years of mis-use.

Replacement parts are not always Ford, or not always the right ones, or not installed by professionals, or put on in confusion - as in the original questions you asked - "I've seen 1 1/2 listed on some sites and 2 1/4 listed on others".

I just changed the shoes on mine a few months ago, and if I remember correctly they were 2 1/4 - 2 1/2 " wide. Think about it and use some logic. A 1 1/2" wide shoe wouldn't stop a motorcycle, much less a Mustang. Remember that with a set of shoes, the front one is not as long as the rear one.

Changed the rear shoes on my 66 conv. I6 and they were 1 1/2 shoes. The rear drums would not take a larger size shoe. All of the online part stores listed three different sizes for the rear shoes. I guess it depends on what came from the factory

According to the official Ford service manual, the following are the correct shoe or pad sizes for factory-installed 1966 Mustang brakes:

All Six Cylinder cars used 9-inch drums front and rear:
Front Drum Shoes: Primary 2.25 x 7.75 / Secondary 2.25 x 10.0
Rear Drum Shoes: Primary 1.5 x 7.75 / Secondary 1.5 x 10.0

Eight Cylinder drum/drum cars used 10-inch drums front and rear:
Front Drum Shoes: Primary 2.25 x 8.35 / Secondary 2.25 x 10.75
Rear Drum Shoes: Primary 1.75 x 8.35 / Secondary 1.75 x 10.75

Eight Cylinder disc/drum cars used 10-inch drums in rear:
Front Disc Pads: 4.82 x 1.84
Rear Drum Shoes: Primary 1.75 x 8.35 / Secondary 1.75 x 10.75
