« on: June 20, 2009, 02:27:26 PM »
I have got a 64.5 D Code auto that I am putting back together. I am a lillte confused by the transmission. Is the original trans a Cruise-o-matic? What is the difference between it and a C4? Where can a find a new torque converter to fit a cruise-o-matic?

Cruise-O-Matic was just the type of Automatic Transmission that the C4  and others were called.  The Cruise-O-Matic was first introduced in 1958 and Ford quit using them in 1980.  Long Before the C4, There was the FORD-O-MATIC Auto transmission...  There were even C6 Trannies called Cruise-O-Matic as well.. The early '64 thru '66 Trannies were called "green dot" trannies. In 1967, They beefed up the C4 and changed the gear selection with two gears reversed, but you can still swap a '67 tranny into a '66 and earlier car..

The bellhousings of the trannies have different bolt patterns as well. The 64/65 has a 5 bolt pattern, and the late 65-'66 and after has a 6 bolt pattern on the C4 bellhousing.

YOU WANt TO DRIVE on the Green Dot. The Green DOT has 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear.

The white dot is only 2nd, and 3rd gear. The white dot is just meant as a passing shift gear while lane changing or blowing by somebody, or to start out in snow or wet pavement.
CJ Pony Parts carries torque converters.  Give them a call.  Have the ID number of your transmission handy.  1-800-888-6473

Looking online I see reference to 24 spline and 26 spline, As long I did't loose count I came up with 29 internal splines on the convertor. So if the transmission is a c4 shouldn't it have 24 splines?
