'66 am radio connections
« on: May 06, 2009, 05:06:38 PM »
Hi,

Here is a pic of the original am radio wires.
I know the black wires with the connector is the speaker wire.
The black wire is key on power but what is the blue and red wire???  Is it a ground wire or a wire for the radio light, or something else?

I'm going to be putting in an aftermarket radio and am going to use the black wire for key on power but want to be sure what the blue red wirte is there for before hooking up the new radio.

Thanks in advance!

Mitch

The blue one is your illumination wire.
Here is something you might want to read if you are thinking about upgrading at a later date.

Thanks Soaring.

Thanks for the link.  I wish I would have seen the refurbished radio before I bought the aftermarket one.  At least I bought the after market radio that looks like the original Ford am-fm radio.

The Illumination wire eh?  Is there power going to the blue red wire?  I checked it with a 12 volt tester and got nothing. The black wire gave me 12 v.

The after market radio wants a keyed 12v power source and a constant on power source for memory.  I was going to run a wire from the cig lighter for the constant power source. I'm thinking the blue/red wire will be useless to me.  right???

If you want a light in the radio, then use the blue wire to your light switch.
