V6 tranny in a 351
« on: August 05, 2010, 06:51:05 PM »
I have a 84 Mustang, previously a v6 car. The transmission bolts up but not sure if anything needs rebuilt on it going to more power and torque? Like the converter or bands? Im assuming its an AOD, it has 1st 2nd and D on the shifter. Its never been fired or drove since the swap and would like to get things taken care of this winter. If it costs the same to upgrade this one i would rather switch to a T-5. Any help i greatly appreciate, thank you.

There seems to be some info missing, like where did the 351 come into the picture? In general a 351W or C has more horse power and torque than a V6 and would most likely over power that transmission.

I agree.  I would drop the idea of using the V6 tranny, and get a T-5.

Sorry but yeah i bought the car from a guy that was half way through a 351w swap. The motor is all done besides getting a ignition box, has a 2bbl carb but need a 4bbl before i start it. Im assuming the T-5 takes the same x-member as the v6? And drive shaft the same? The guy i bought it from had a custom aluminum one made. Basically im looking to start car and set timing and stuff before winter then do tranny swap as a winter project. Cant wait to get this done, my cousin has a 83 with a 302 doing 450 horse and according to guy i bought car from its figured to be around 430 horse, so might be a good race lol.

if it has a 2 barrel carb you will not even see half of 430hp!  your engine is most likly 155hp to 225hp at the crank. regaurdless i think a c4, aod for a 302, or a t5 is the way to go.

i wouldnt use a t5....you could but a 351 can make it go kaboom(so can a 302 for that matter) but if your wanting to keep it auto id buy a 4r70w and get a transmission controller(very stout auto) idk if you have a AOD or not...you might just have a C5 tranny(basically a metric version of the c4 with a lock up torque converter) post a picture of your transmission oil pan and someone can ID it for you

looks like a c4/c5 type tranny the c4's were used till 1981  after e1 beginning part numbers(1981) will be e2(1982),e3(1983) etc

Thank You! Now with it being a C5 are the parts from a C4 the same? as in valve bodys, shift kits, clutches? Also can a convertor from a C4 work. Im assuming this transmission should work for awhile in my car if it came with original 5.0 mustangs? Cant really find much info on the C5. And again thanks!

the c5 is pretty much a metric version (bolt wise) of a c4...the valve body iirc will swap but on a c5 i believe they have lock up torque converters so im not sure if the pumps are the same??

the clutches and steels should swap over between the 2 iirc

Ok sounds good! Im assuming this should hold up to a street driven 351w if the factory 302 gt cars had this tranny.  Saves me alot of time and money on getting this ready to drive. Thank You again.

So if the valve bodys swap i assume when i buy parts i just go with parts for a c4? like a shift kit plate? I read that i can use a convertor from a c4 as long as everything lines up, anyone know if that the case? I googled about it alot and supposedly its better than a c4 but i dont know a whole lot about automatics.
