transmission removal
« on: July 28, 2009, 02:37:58 PM »
i just have a quick clarification. when removing the transmission do i have to remove the tr from the clutch housing or the clutch housing from the engine. im pretty sure i have to remove the bolts from the clutch housing to the engine. just so you know i have a 5 spd transmission.

Drop your driveshaft, then just pull back on the tranny.  Make sure you have the tranny on a lift or jack that rolls.

Double and triple check that you have all of the bellhousing bolts out.  You may have to use a flat piece of steel that is long enough for leverage, and pry between the bell housing and the block to break the seal.

Another option outside the prybar is to take your foot and place it against the tailshaft housing and give it a little kick. Often that will also tell you if there are any bolts left that you may have missed without putting too much pressure on the bellhousing.

no i was told on another site that you can drill a small hole in the middle of the seal and put a machine screw in it and pull it out that way.

Never though of that.  That would be the cheap way out if it actually works.

Glad to hear it worked.  Now, that is something that I should put in the FAQ.  Let us know when you get her all back together and no more leaking.  Send me the article or the link to the forum where the guy suggested this method.

Do that, as if it is a tech article, and I will definitely post it in the FAQ and give you credit.

Ok. First I drilled a small hole on either side of the seal(3/32 bit I believe). Then I screwed two screws into the holes. The next step was like carpentry work. I used my vice grips to anchor my hammer as I pried at each screw with the claw side of the hammer(just like pulling out nails with a 2x4 as an anchor). Using that method it came out withease. That's it. A lot easier than I thought it would be.
