Starter doesn't work when engine is hot
« on: September 10, 2009, 11:09:17 PM »
I have a 91 5.0 LX that is essentially stock (K&N Air Filter).  For the last few years, the engine starts normally when it is cold (and cool), but when the engine is hot, the starter will simply not turn the engine over.  In fact, if I hold the ignition key turned to the start position for any extended period of time or make several attempts to engage the starter, I can see and smell smoke coming from the wiring near the battery terminals.   I assume the starter is locked up or ? and the electrical power is basically shorting out causing excessive heat to build in the wires.  I usually end up pushing it and popping the clutch to start the engine.  Please offer any advice or thoughts on this issue.  Thanks!

It's time for a starter replacement.  What is happening is that the hot block is making the internal wiring on your starter to swell, therefore locking it up.  You might try wrapping some heavy tin foil around the starter and see if that solves the problem and proves my theory.  But, in the end, you will need to replace the starter.

I have taken your advice.  I purchased a new starter and hope to have it in soon.  Thanks a million!

OK, but in the future just remember you can buy rebuilt starters for these Mustangs at any auto parts store near you house, and if you take your old starter to them for trade, you won't be charged a core charge.
