rotted lower manifold
« on: October 04, 2008, 03:36:49 PM »
my 89 5.0 manifold is rotting from the inside out. small holes just behind the thermostat housing and distributor at the beginning of the casted numbers. the car only has 68,000 miles. is this a common problem? any quick fix ideas short of replacing the manifold?

very strange... buy another one and swap it on.  have you flushed the radiator lately?? the coolant can become acidic and basically become a battery and start eating away the metal.

Lower manifold???  I assume we are talking about the intake manifold.  I have never heard of an anti-freeze solution rotting out the intake manifold, but I guess I haven't seen everything.   ;D  And, if the hole was at the anti-freeze section of the manifold, you would see a spray of anti-freece. Where arethese holes appearing?  Do you hear suction sounds when the engine is running?  At any rate, your question was what can be a temporary fix.  And my only advice would be to plug the holes with some J-B weld for now, but obviously you are going to have to replace the intake manifold.
