off topic- Crown Victoria problems
« on: June 10, 2010, 08:45:54 PM »
sorry, i didn't know where else to post this. figured somebody could help me in the 5.0 section. i got a 88 crown vic. cuts off randomly. doesn't matter what the rpms are. the car just cuts off. you could be at idle at a red light or you could be doing 75 down the highway. it doesn't bog down or chug or anything, it just dies. which makes me think its electrical.

It's electrical.  Do a complete tune-up on it to find the short.

i changed the wires, the plugs, and the control module. it runs a lot better now but it still cuts off randomly. how would i narrow this down?

i plan on starting the engine later and messing with wires till i get it to cut off. its gotta be some kind of short. maybe a sensor or something.

i have no idea whats wrong with this thing. it doesn't want to start. its like the fuel pump isn't working, but it doesn't sputter and die. it just dies. it'll burn off the gas that is pumped into it when you turn over the key. but then it dies. if you mess with it long enough it'll start and run. but might die soon after or a few minutes down the road. i'm not sure its electrical anymore. it tends to die more often when you're stopped and idling at a red light and then hit the gas to go. so i'm thinking i need a new fuel pump. any input?

It still sounds like an electrical problem.   It could be a whole bunch of things to include a worn out ignition switch.  Get out the old Multi-meter and go to testing.  But, if everything checks out electrically, then attack the fuel delivery.  Fuel pump pressure to a clean gas filter.

if the car dies while i'm going down the road. i don't have to put it in neutral and crank it again. all i have to do is turn the key back and then forward again and it starts running again.  the car doesn't completely cut off while i'm going down the road. it acts like it dies but as long as i keep it in drive i don't lose power steering and i can still hear the engine. but gas doesn't respond again till i flip the switch back and forward again. if i put it in neutral it completely dies.
