Mustang II - need help replacing stock 302 with 1986 302
« on: January 24, 2009, 11:58:38 AM »
I'm replacing the stock 302 in my 1975 mustang with an 1986 302.   We're only replacing the basic engine so we've put on the old carb/manifold, accessories, and exhaust.   We will be using the 75 auto trans also.

What else do I need to consider?

Thanks for any help!

Not much else.  Have you already disconnected  all related electronic items you don't need from the 86?   Which carb did you go with?

THanks for the quick reply!   Yes, all the electronics have been removed.   Initially I'm moving over the stock carb that's still on the intake.     This is a 'project on the cheap' so I'm attempting to not purchase anything unless i have to.  Do you see a serious problem using the old carb?

Not at all, in fact that Motorcraft carb is the toughest and most reliable carb on earth.  I rebuild them, so I know.  Is it a 4V or a 2V intake and carb?

You will have one heck of a vibration if you don't change the flywheel/flexplate, your original motor is balanced at 28.5ozs the new motor is 50oz. Since you are using the old trans don't bother looking for a used flywheel/flexpate it's an oddball, If I remember right it has 141 teeth on the flexplate and the only place I could find one was at art carr perfomance.

One last suggestion is the cars rear axle if it's stock it is an 8 inch (uses the same parts as a small bearing 9 inch) and it'll have 3.55 gears which is cool, but only one wheel is driven so you'll have to either put in a spool or traction device of your choice. The reason is that you are about to take your traction poor car from 139 stock HP to 225 HP.
