manual to automatic swap.
« on: July 14, 2010, 02:02:53 PM »
I have a 1990 LX 5.0 with the stock 5 speed t5 tranny in it. the syncros are bad in in second and third gear. I just got a freshly rebuilt c4 tranny capable of holding 700 hp and i want to do the swap but Im not sure as to what all i need to do this. I know you probably think i crazy but  for taking out the 5 speed but i go to the strip alot and automatic will come in handy. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You will need a flexplate 50 Oz imbalance, a crossmember, transmission mount, driveshaft, the C-4 used a kickdown lever that you will need to work around since hooking it up on a EFI car might not be that easy, floor shifter, transmission cooler and lines proper slip joint for the C-4.

I don't know if you will need to modify your exhaust for clearance, but it is certainly something to be on the look out for.  As to your computer . . . may work, but you need to research that.  Not sure where the speedo signal comes from on a T-5 but if it is electronically generated, you will probably need to use an aftermarket speedometer (if you need one)

For track purposes you might actually make the car pretty quick-C-4's have a better reputation now than they did when they were actually installed in cars from the factory.  In thirty years of driving I have trashed 5 transmissions-2 were C-4's behind low power engines.

and you are not crazy-but a three speed auto is going to make street driving less pleasant and highway driving will be out of the question unless you change your rear end ratio, at which point the stall converter etc. was a waste of time as  you will be slower again

It might make sense for a strip only car though if you can scrounge and fabricate.

Yeah, you're crazy.   ;D  Most folks do the opposite.
