Here to help
« on: February 01, 2008, 01:50:32 PM »
I'm good at alot of mustangs.  But most of my knowledge is with 5.0's.  So don't hesitate to ask any questions.  My dad always says "There is no such thing as a stupid question, except the one you don't ask".  Ask away, if I don't know I've got all kinds of literature about it. ;D

Good to know that Bossnutt.  I not only own a 65 289 coupe, but I also own an 03 Mach1.  As a team, maybe we can build these sites up to where there is some more traffic.

This is what I could find.  I hope it helps.

Otherwise you could get a Haynes manual and it'll have everything in there.

Thanks for being there. I'm new to this forum and I hope you can help me. I have purchased a 66 Coupe which which I was told has a newly rebuilt engine that started out as a 69 302. There was maybe 3K on the engine when I got it. Ok here is the problem. I was driving this weekend and yes I goosed it a couple times and I started hearing a ticking sound from the engine. It got louder as I nursed it home and when I did get home I opened the hood while the engine was still running and the loud ticking sound seems to be coming from under the valve cover. I have some mechanical experience and it seems to me that this  is not good. Can you give me some input?

i dont have a lot of experience either but it sounds like you have a bad valve on the piston. ive seen this before on another vehicle. when we pulled the engine and pulled it apart we found a cracked exhaust valve. i could be wrong but thats what it sounds like to me.

Thanks for your input guys. My neighbor who is a Ford fanatic came over and took a piece of hose and used it to find the problem. One of my header bolts was missing and so I was really glad that all I have to do is buy a pair of header gaskets and new bolts and LOCK-TITE, which it seems the guy who built the engine never heard of. This is not the first loose bolt problem.

It's always good when a project comes together.  Yeah, an exhaust leak will create that ticking problem which sounds very much like a loose tappet.  Get yourself a large screwdriver the next time this happens, and put the business end on the engine, and put your ear on the handle.  It is like a stethroscope.  You will be able to pinpoint the exact location of the noise.

Being a newbee I was really impressed  by how quick you folks were to answer. Some other sites when you post a question and check and check, you wonder if there's anybody out there. I am so glad it was an easy fix too. I called the previous own and he assured me that there was only 3K on the engine. I am going to take some pictures and start a gallery. Oh here's another question. The original color was called 'Summertime Yellow'. How hard would it be to find paint to match that color today?

get the paint code number off your VIN, and give these guys that plus the name of the yellow color, and they will send you all the paint you want.
