« on: July 12, 2010, 08:07:46 PM »
i got a 16" electric fan to put on my 93 gt. where is the best place to run the wires? i'm gonna put a switch in the car to turn it on and off. i need to get through my firewall i'm guessing. but i don't see any easy places i could go. any suggestions?

Locate where your speedometer cable and main wiring goes through your firewall.  It should be near the steering column.  You may have to dig out some tar to get passage to the interior.

ok thanks. also, what do you suggest, mounting the fan between the motor and the radiator and having it sucking air or should i put it in front of the radiator and have it blowing air?

I would place it between the motor and radiator, mounted to the radiator.   Just inside the shroud.  If you don't have a shroud, get one.  Think about it.  If you are traveling down the road at 70 mph you already have a 70 mph wind going through the radiator, and if you are stuck in traffic, pulling air through the radiator will cool much more than pushing it through.  Just make sure you have a shroud so you can concentrate the air through the rad and not around it.  How many modern cars do you see with a fan in front of the radiator?  It just doesn't make sense.

good point. i still have the shroud. and i found a good spot to go through the firewall. its the hole that the hood latch cable runs into.

Glad you found a hole through the firewall to run it.  Put that shroud back on it and I think you will notice a big difference.

i'm hoping to notice some difference. it would be nice if i gained a couple hp but what i'm really looking for is keeping the motor cooler.  theres a lot of rust in my cooling system. had any luck with a certain flush product?

You don't want to use any of those acid products.  Just use plain water to flush it.   Use a mixture of distilled water and anti-freeze to fill it back up .

Yeah, we'd like to see that bad boy at all stages of restorartion.  So, tell us.  Is that engine running cooler now?  Did you flush it?

its running a lot cooler. i didn't flush it yet. and its still got just water in it. gonna try to take care of that this week. the weather's been kinda bad for working on cars lately. i wanna put a new radiator in it. but i'm afraid to cause theres so much rusty brown build up in the old one and in the hoses and in the cooling jacket of the motor and in the intake manifold. i'd like to get it as clean as i could but i'm cautious about using any kind of flush now. don't wanna start some kind of leak...  i also noticed that my transmission cooling line is not there. haha  the two transmission fluid hoses that run in and out of the radiator are missing. so i need to figure out whats up with that.

Yeah, as I said before, you don't want to use any acid flush, because that will flake off the crap and stop up the system.  But. you do need to flush out the system with water.  And, replace with a mixture of anti-freeze and distilled water.

well i figured out what was with the tranny cooler hoses.... i'm dumb.  someone had previously changed the radiator out and put a rad in from a automatic car. and as we all know manual transmissions don't have cooler lines.

Just plug up the holes and you should be good to go.  I have the holes plugged on the bottom of my rad, and she works like a charm.
