clutch cable keeps breaking
« on: March 15, 2009, 03:59:27 PM »
i have a 91 gt with a cobra r bell housing and the clutch cable keeps breaking. it looks like the clutch fork is too short. does anyone know if you need to replace the clutch fork when you put the cobra r bellhousing on?

I dug around in my many Mustang magazines and spent some time on the internet, and there is no mention of a special clutch fork for a Cobra R bellhousing.  I am wondering if you are just getting the cable too tight, and is snaps from just too much pressure on it.  Or, it might be rubbing on the bellhousing and wearing through.  Determine why it is breaking, then go after the problem from there.

One time it snapped because I think it was just too tight. The other times (and the most recent) it was the cable wearing through, and the sheathing inside the cable is being pulled out of the clutch end of the cable. It appears that the angle between the pilot hole in the bell housing and the receiving hole in the fork is too great, and the cable is rubbing against the inside sheathing. If the fork was about 2 inches longer, the 2 holes would line up and eliminate all that friction. That's why I'm thinking there might be a different fork available.

This is a BBK adjustable cable setup, not the factory. The first time it happened was with the factory setup. Same issue happens with the BBK.

Same thing happen to me last night, I snapped the end that connects to the Clutch Fork at a stoplight during Rush Hour, replaced with clutch cable from Schucks (Kragers) snapped right after installing it (followed how the "stock" cable ran) this time the plastic ring near the bottom end of cable snapped. Planning on replacing it again, where does the adjuster sit at? I was told that I have to replace that also....do I have to and where do I put it?

If you get the aftermarket one, it adjusts from the firewall side.
