AOD trans swap for a T5
« on: June 14, 2010, 02:03:27 PM »
Anyone here done the swap from AOD to T5? I just picked up a nice rebuilt one from a 94 Cobra and want to do this swap. Any heads up would be great.

I lifted this from a member a long time ago, so will just post his answer.  Maybe this will get you started in the right direction.

"It is actually an easy swap if you have a rack to lift it on. I did mine in the driveway by myself. I thought the pedals were easy compared to getting the aod out by my self...
I found it was fairly simple to remove the steering column, all the tin around it, and the pedals were pretty easy to remove.
the list of parts other than the trans should be...
1 shifter
2 clutch cable
3 flywheel
4 pedal assy
5 clutch assy with throw out bearing and thrust(pilot) bearing
6 you may have to trim out the shifter are around the tunnel to clear the t5 shifter(I did)
7 new speedo gear for t5
8 get a good quadrant... the stock sucks
9 bolts for the clutch and bell
10 gonna have to cut out the cable hole in the fire wall to move the speedo cable
11 I probably forgot some thing even though I just did this. oh a shift knob/and boot
in a shop this should take someone with very good mechanical skills about 5 hours with all the parts and tools at the ready. it took me a full day on my back and in the sun.I got bad sunburnt too, from the knees down....If you have any questions you can pm me and ill try to help you out with whatever you need. the othe thing to take into coinsideration is if you plan to wire in a clutch pedal safety switch so it wount start without the cluch engaged, I opted not to. Good luck  "

you normally can go to an auto tranny to a manual without a computer swap

and the reverse wiring might need to be worked on? on my 91 gt the wiring was the same and it just plugged in

the hardest part of the swap is the pedal install basically gotta remove the dash to install them :(

why not buy a built 4r70w and swap it in place of the AODE and get a nice stall computer etc youll be set

Thx for the info. I'm gonna stick w/using a 5 speed. Already got the pedal assembly w/wiring, fork & bellhousing. Just a few more items and the swap will be on!

Let us know how it turns out.  While you're in there, you may as well put in a heavy duty clutch if you plan to race it.

Why an aluminum driveshaft?  Does that decrease the weight of the car or something?  Or is it just stronger than the steel driveshaft?

Yes on both accounts. Less recipricating weight, much like an aluminum flywheel vs steel.
