84 v6 to 351w swap
« on: July 24, 2010, 03:11:12 PM »
Hi, new to this site. I bought a 84 that a guy was swapping in a 351w and everything is done except for ignition wiring. I already swapped the coil, but the v6 apparently had the ignition module on the distributor with a 6 prong plug. I have a distributor out of a 79 351w that has a 3 prong plug. Now, If i buy a module new for a 84 5.0 what wires or what would it take to make this work? Very frustrating cause the new distributor the guy gave me is 1/2" to long on the shaft, so i used this one from a 79 i had with no cap so i went to autozone 2 times trying to find cap, found one but rotor wont fit. I dont know if it needs the adapter since theres no eec connected to it or not. But main thing is ignition module problem. If any of you have done this swap or have good directions on this i would greatly appreciate it, im ok with motors, not wiring lol. Thank You, Brian

Thank You! I ended up buying a MSD box and it was pretty simple to hook up. Ive ran the car 3 times for about 10 seconds cause just has the shorties on it. Found a guy that has complete exhaust so once i get that i can set timing with a light and take it for a spin. Cant wait!

Found a guy around here that buys fox bodys and has 10 of them that are mostly complete. He has an H and X pipe along with custom single downtubes. Im prolly going with the singles cause i dont know how well the H and X pipes will fit onto the 351. Dont wanna waste my money when i know the singles will work for sure. Just want car driving now. Talked to a kid that has a 85 with a 351w and he has equal length shorties so if that works i wanna go that route this spring. But the feeling when the car first fired was pure satisfaction on my part, not so much the neighbors with the noise of just headers lol. So yeah pipes and flowmasters and thats about it. Havent had antifreeze or water in it yet though. Wanna get exhaust on so i can break in cam and get engine hot to set gaskets then add antifreeze. Honestly i helped a guy drag race a chevy vega and for the most part alot of people were nice but i'll say one thing ive made a ton of friends doing this car, nothings better than mustang guys getting along.

You got that right.  We Mustangers are a family.  We share information and experiences.  If you are at the point of letting it run for more than a few seconds, go ahead and get the water/anitfreeze mixture in the Rad and block.
