6 To 8 Conversion
« on: October 30, 2008, 07:46:07 PM »
Hi There,

I'll be moving to the US early next year and one of the first things I'll be buying is a Mustang :-)

While I want a late 60s eventually I'm looking at a 4th Gen to start of with. My question is, is it possible to convert a 3.8 6cylinder to the 4.8 or 5.0? Are the wiring looms the same or are they quite different? What about mounts for the engine and gearbox?
From what I've seen the 6's are cheaper to buy (which is why I'm asking all this) and it'll be a good wee project to do the conversion but if it's going to be more of an expensive BIG project I'll just get an 8 cylinder to start off with and spend my $$$ on making it go quicker  :)

Or maybe I could look at getting a 6 to go quicker? What are your thoughts?

Thanks
   Paul

Well, first of all, it is not a 4.8 V8, but rather a 4.6.  Taking out a V6 and replacing it with a V8 is very expensive.  You would be better off buying a V8 in the first place.  Why would you even consider a V6, if your intention was to have a V8.  That just doesn't make sense.

On the 4.8 error...  :-[

Why would I do it? Purely cost, which is why I asked the question.

Thanks for the info'.

If it is purely cost, consider the following since you are considering a used Mustang.  The years you are considering are still devaluating, meaning they are still losing value, and most likely will not go back up within your lifetime. The cost of a used V6 and a used V8 is not that much.  So, if you are considering buying a V6 and converting it to a V8, you are going to be wasting a lot of money, and a hellava' lot of labor and headaches and time.  Just buy a V8 Mustang if that is your ultimate goal.
