5.0 sputtering. Timing advance???
« on: January 06, 2010, 01:58:27 AM »
I have a 1987 mustang gt, everythings stock exept for full flowmaster exhaust and a custom intake.  Problem is, when im driving normal, it sputters wicked bad. But if i floor it or close to floored, it runs fine with no sputtering. I noticed if i retard the timing a little, its opposite. It will run fine under normal driving, but then when i floor it and the rpms go over around 3000 it sputters the same as before.  This all started when i powerwashed the motor and the connector that goes into the module on the distributor got coroded and the car died on me. Then i ended up moving the distributor to get the module off to test it. I cleaned the plug and put it back together and it started.  It seems like a problem with the timing advance.   The other thing is, if i sit in my yard and keep it reved to around 2500 for 20 seconds or so, it feels like the timing advance kicks in and then it runs fine with no sputtering untill i let it idle for a minute or two, then it does the same thing all over again.  It has new plugs/wires/cap and rotor, and a new ignition module. I have no idea what it could be?????

Then you most likely have a coil that is shorting out on probably #8 piston.  Take it in and have the codes read, or do it yourself.
