'88 302 Problem .. Please help.
« on: October 11, 2009, 06:24:58 PM »
Hello All.  I have a 1988 302 V8 & Ford 4spd auto gearbox in my 1980 Volvo 262c.  Recently, after an hour or so, the gas pedal goes dead, and the motor shuts off.  I think I hear low backfiring.  The car will restart right away & run fine.  It will do that maybe 10 times and totally go away.  I cleaned the throttle body & bypass valve.  What is causing this?  Its annoying as all hell & embarrassing.  My car looks so nice & to have to pull over every block sucks.  Please help me.  I noticed it always does that on even the slightest incline like RR tracks & speed humps.   Could it be my gas tank?  It is 30 years old.  Thank you for listening & I appreciate your help.  -Erik FL-

Thanks for everyone's help.  Volvo For Life.  I should've used a Chevy motor.

Sounds like trash in the tank that is stopping up your fuel filter. Change the fuel filter with one of those in-line see-through filters and see if it is trash coming from the tank.

A see-through filter?  That is a good start.  Had no idea they made those.  Thank you for the tip.

Yeah, they are clear plastic wrapped around a paper filter that is inside.  Check with a parts place.

If I plug the computer into a machine, would it be able to tell me?  I have been researching online & found it may be the  EGR valve.  Does that sound possible?

Have you checked your fuel pressure?  Are you still relying on the stock Vulva fuel pump?  If you are still using the the Ford computer and sensors then the code reader should help with finding the culprit.  Just about any Autozone etc. should help you with this for free.  They may not plug it in for you for fear of law suites but that's no big deal either and they can look up the codes.

OK I will check that.   Yes, both fuel pumps are new Bosch pumps from Volvo.

is it fuel injected???  i am assuming so, one other thing you can check is a damaged "crash sensor" or "impact sensor" i think that is what they are called??? i think your volvo has one in the trunk. it is so when you get hit it shuts off the fuel pump.

I will look into that.  Gotta flip through all my manuals.  That's a new one for me.  Thank you for the help.
