Topic: Is this as easy as it looks?

I will need to replace a fuel pump on a 1998 GT. It look very easy to do. I have already had the fuel lines disconnected. The tank appears to be attached by 4 bolts that look very easy to get at. Then of course I'll have to disconnect the power wire to the pump. The tank is not very full so it shouldn't be ridiculously heavy and if I support it with a jack or something that should be easy enough. Is the pump at all difficult to get out of the tank once the tank is down? Is there anything else that isn't easy that I should watch for?

  I need to know this too. Glad you posted this question, I bought a fuel pump for my baby just havent installed it yet.

I didn't get a reply here so I did a bit of other looking around and found a thread on StangNet that is very comprehensive. The guy even posted correspondence with an online tech that he paid to help him diagnose and it talk about how to do it as well. There are pictures and it is very long. Here is the link:

Also, I found a new fuel pump repair kit on ebay for mustangs from 98-04. It's only $40 but it includes a new pump which you basically install in the old housing, as well as fuel strainers and a pigtail connector and clip. I am slightly skeptical to buy something like this for so cheap from ebay, but he's got a 98.3% positive rating and has done over 44000 sales, so I'm thinking it must not be garbage. Anyone have any opinions on this?

I went through his reviews and pretty much all the negative you can tell was from really dumb people that don't pay attention.

Thanks for that forum discussion  Konrad.  That should be put into a FAQ section in the 98 section, but unfortunately we haven't created it yet, and we really shouldn't use discussions from other forums because once posted there, it becomes the property of that forum.

Well i have recently replaced the fuel pump on my 96 GT, and i do beleive that is set up exactly the same as the 98. So that being said yes it is very easy, it will take a little while to do but is not hard. The thing i had the most trouble with was dissconnecting the fuel lines and getting the filler neck out of the tank, it just pulls out hard but it does pull out, and i had a well layer of rubber and dust under it so it was like working in a sand pit, so i would suggest washing under it very well first and letting it dry then going at it..... hope that helps
