How to tell if I have pi heads
« on: August 12, 2008, 09:58:42 AM »
I just bought my 98 GT about a month ago, and from what I've been reading it seems to have more power then it should. Other then the exhaust the guy that I bought it from didn't say anything about mods but it had been owned by at least two people before him. So I looked at the engine and someone has defiantly done some work done around the heads. Now with it only having 79k miles on it I don't think it was in need of a tune up, so does anyone know of anyway to check if it has pi heads other then taking apart my engine?

Visually from the outside the PI and NPI heads are the same.  Try finding either a stamping number or the actual PI stamped on the head somewhere. If nothing else, take off one of the manifolds and you can identify it.  The PI heads will have a square port, and the NPI ports will be tear drop shaped.
The oil fill is a dead give-away if it is on the pax side,  but some PI have it on the Driver's side too.
Also, maybe check the coolant sensors to see if there is a differently tapped one or a "Y" on the sensor cause pre-PI had two sensors where PI has one, so the wiring dictates that you mod for two sensors.

99-04 were PI. 96-98 were non-pi. Engines were either Romeo or Windsor.

That's true, but since he has a 98 where the engine from a 99 or newer Mustang engine could have been added, he has no way to identify it as a PI or an NPI unless he follows the above.   Most likely he has an NPI because anymore these cars are throwaways .
Instead of repairing them with a fresh engine, kids today usually opt to buy a new car instead of refreshing their old one.    I may go to a junk yard and buy a 90 something Mustang and restore it just for grins.
