Going from a V6 to a Cobra V8 DOHC system help please
« on: March 17, 2010, 10:29:18 AM »
I have a 2001 Mustang with a V6 in it. We are changing out the V6 to a 2001 Cobra DOHC motor. What do I need to do to make this motor work besides beef up the front suspension, put a heavier clutch in and put in a Cobra transmission. I have done all that just want to know what I need to do motor wise. Thanks in advance. Joe

Do some more research and find out if the V6 has the same differential as the Cobra.  If it is a weaker rear, you might consider putting the Cobra rear in it as well.  I believe you are going to need an 8.8 rear.  Other than motor mounts and transmission bar, I see no reason why it won't just slip right in if you have all the wiring and computer from the Cobra.    Oh, I just thought of something else.  Your odometer  and speedometer will be off.  Also, check with the yearly inspection of the car, to see if the VIN is used in the inspection of the car.  That may give you trouble.  It will also give you fits if you every wanted to sell the car.  Have you considered selling the V6, and buying a Cobra car?  I'm not against the swap, but after you look deeply into it, you may save some money by just getting a Cobra.

We had a guy do that that is in our club westsidemustangs. I know he had to do a lot of work as far as I saw because the engine bay is small in a v6 than a cobra. The motor barely fit in it so I am pretty sure that plus all the computer stuff and whatnot you would have to modify the engine somewhat.

That's the case in most applications.  Putting a large engine into a V6 body is not a good idea.  Yes, it can be done, but at what expense?
