I have a 2000 gt and I am wondering how I would go about making a AWD conversion. Which ford drive trains are closest to a 2000 gt? also I have a roush so would the roush suspension package be changed all that much.. if at all?

Why? Do you plan on going mudding in that Mustang? In my opinion, you either have too much time on your hands or you have too much money that could be put into a real 4 wheel drive vehicle.

I don't really like any of the real awd cars as much as I like my mustang, not to mention it would be sick, how many people can say they have an awd mustang, it would handle great too

I have dirven a few awd cars ei my friends 400hp evo 8 and it was on of the funniest times i have ever had in a car ther is nothing like the feeling and awd car off a launch or in a corner i think that it would be awesome to do and i am sure it can be done but the price tag would be high extremely high. although a more afordable option would be to buy an older awd car and work on that maybe an eagle talon i have seen them with very similar body kits to almost mimick a late 90's mustang.

If you think 4 wheel drive cars were superior to back wheel cars, don't you think NASCAR would have adopted the concept?

Hmmmmm never thought about that but they only usually turn left and there cars are set up in such a way that they can only turn left. And why use AWD when u have basically unlimitted funds to create a body that creates mass amounts of down force with out that added weight of an awd system. The same for the open wheel cars also they rather but a 80k front spoiler on a car then add a awd drive system and save that few hundred pounds but the average joe isnt going to go to a wind tunnel and figure out how to do things like that unless u have a degree in areonotics. So for the lamens people an awd system gives u all the traction with out the ungodly costs of spoilers and body motification that would give u all that down force. Also awd drive will let u hook in a turn doing 30-40 mph full throttal if u take a finially tuned car that is ment to create all that down force it will have problems negiotiating turns at low speeds

The Indy cars go right, and they only have rear wheels to propel them, so do the funny cars. 4 wheel drive is good for snow, mud and outback driving. As far as handling, they have absolutely no advantage.

Yeah but arent we talking about street cars a funny car is usually sitting on a ton of rubber in the back. I assume that you have never been in a modern awd car because the expierence is amazing. There are not really many rwd drive cars that can pull the same g's on a skid pad then an awd drive car like an STI or a GTR.

I have owned and driven awd trucks/vans/Suv's. They are good for off road and weather conditions such as snow, but not conducive to racing or driving on dry roads. Yes, they are superior in certain conditions. but certainly not for daily driving. Just too much friction. On a side note: I would dearly love to own a GTR. Not for the AWD, but for the sheer performance of that beast.

there are a few people that live around me that actually own GTR's and they are so cool they actually have a on board system to tell you how many G's you pull in a corner.

i say build it! awd cars like the wrx sti, porsche, and the audi's are fuckin sick and will out perform any rear drive (street legal)car on the street and or road course! if i had the money i would do it too!

That whole front end would have to come out and replaced by a 4wd front, not to mention the transission and all the other drivetrain related parts. Dumb idea IMO.

I am working on a similar project but based on a 69 SR shell. I have bought the following parts : 01 explorer spinles, cv shafts, front différential, awd transfert case, 4R70W transmission. the engine will be a 4.6L cobra engine with a Eaton supercharger. I have all these parts in my shop. I am still wondering if I ll go for a cobra IRS or a solid explorer rear axle.

to my knowledge, the engine has to be moved a little on the passenger side and the transmission tunnel widened. I will build a separate chassis and I am still looking for A-arms ; the negine will also be set back for weight distribution

awd are the best cars on the road, since my unforgettable Audi S6 quattro, I am working on building that project.

good luck with your project, sn mustang are plentiful and cheap so if your project is well thought, it won't be that expensive. ( I am under $9000 including the engine and 69 purchases)

I really like the tenacity of you guys who alter factory cars, but this just seems really abnormal to me. The car won't be worth any more after you spend 9K on it to alter the original configuration than before you started spending the 9K. Bad idea IMO. Get a Jeep if you want AWD.

The reason I say they would not have an awd mustang is because we make too much power and would break an axle with ease on a launch because of the wheel hop. That is why no high horsepower cars are awd. IMO you would have to be crazy to make a stang awd.

USE A HEAVILY MODIFIED 1999 AND UP FORD EXPLORER FULL TIME 4WD DRIVE TRAIN. AND I.M KINDA SURE YOUR GONNA HAVE TO SET THE ENGINE TO THE REAR AT LEAST 14+ INCHES, AND USE A JAGUAR IRS FOR THE FRONT AND OFF SET THE HOUSING TO THE PASSENGER SIDE AND CUSTOM MAKE STEERING KNUCKLES AND HALF SHAFTS. I THINK THATS THE RECIPIE FOR AWESOMENESS!!!
