Another new guy with a some questions
« on: September 08, 2008, 06:24:18 PM »
Hey guys hows it going? I have a bone stock 2000 mustang gt (automatic). I'm finally looking into doing some work on my car to make it a little faster. I talked to a buddy of mine and he recommened a set of 3.73 gears. Can anyone tell me the difference between the different kinds (i.e. 3.73, 3.55, 4.10)

if you have an automatic then you want the 4.10

the rule of thumb for stangs normally are 3.73 (5spd and the 4.10's for autos

The difference between all the gears, is that the higher the number, the more cogs the gear will have.  In other words, a 4.10 will have more cogs than a 3.73.  The more cogs you have, the faster your rear end will spin, making your rear tires spin faster.  But, you reach a point of no return at high speeds.  Higher gear ratios are for stop light to stop light or drag  racing.  Gear ratios that are like 2.80:1 are for highway speeds and cruising.  The lower the ratio, the better the gas mileage on the freeway because the engine RPM is lower.

alright thanks a lot. So would 3.73 gears give me good accerleration and still have control and decent gas mileage?

Just a thought... does anyone know if it's possible to get a 2-speed rear end for a mustang? It sure would be nice to have the best of both worlds...

Alright thanks Rmodel. I'll look into those 4.10's and see how it turns out
