5.4 swap
« on: May 14, 2009, 08:08:21 PM »
I have a friend with a 5.4 motor out of a 2002 truck....willing to sell it to me for 200 bucks...motor is fully intact, nothing missing. but has alot of miles on it.  i've been looking for a stroker kit for it but cant seem to find anything on it.  idk what to do?  fully build my 4.6?  or buy the 5.4 and find parts to build it?   what would be my best bet on getting the most hp and tq?

Truck engines are designed for pulling, not speed.  You would have to replace most of the engine if you rebuilt that 5.4.  Rebuild the 4.6

see i was gonna tear the whole motor down and replace everything on it. new crank, rods, and pistons so it wasnt set up for a truck anymore....that it would make power for speed, not for hauling or towing. and it has PI heads on it already which i was gonna have shaved some, all new valves, and a set of cams.   i figured it would be a nasty motor when it was all done???  maybe im wrong haha.

Yeah, that would be a winner if all you use is the block.

The 4.6 and the 5.4 are basically the same engine.  The 4.6 already has most of the parts you are going to need to upgrade and will cost you a lot less in the long run, so if you want to upgrade, the 4.6 will cost you less for basically the same power.

yeah the 5.4 is pretty much a stroked 4.6    4.6 has 225 hp and 275 lb-tq.  the 5.4 has 300 hp and 365 lb-tq. so if i were to stroke a 4.6 it would pretty much be a 5.4    so i figured id put diffterent rods, crank, and pistons in the 5.4 block to make it bigger and make more hp and tq

It all depends on how deep your pockets are.  My 4.6 came from the factory with 300 HP.

Yeah, mine's an  '03 Mach 1.  I don't race my cars, so 300 HP is all this old man needs, otherwise I'd be getting into trouble.   ;D  I doubt a ricer could hang with me.

You stay out of trouble young lady.   Don't street race.  There is nothing good that can come from a street race, but many bad things that can. Enjoy your custom Mustang for what it is, and don't try to show off a 225 HP Mustang to a superior idiot ricer.  They will slap your ass and you know it ahead of time, so don't do two stupid things.  One is to race them on the street in first place, and the other is to expect you will win with your weak assed 225 HP engine.  This is Grandpa Soaring talking.

What makes the extra 75 HP between the 1998 and 1999 GTs?  Computer, cams....?

Thanks,

1996 to 1998 is the same for all SOHC Mustangs, you can install a 1999 to 2004 4.6 SOHC "PI" engine, which has better intake manifold, cylinder heads and cams....but you will have to change the front timing chain cover to your year and if you get a 99/00 you'll have to get a different flywheel to as your car, being a Romeo engine has a 6 bolt flywheel and 1999/2000 are Windsor engines and have a 8 boly flywheel....
