1998 Battery Light
« on: October 08, 2008, 12:17:35 PM »
My daughters battery light comes on whle accelerating. The light goes off when you let off the pedal. The alt is putting out 13.5 at idle. Could there be an alt diode going bad causing that light to come on?

In all my years of wrenching, I have never heard of this problem.  My suggestion is to take your car to Autozone or some other parts place and have them check your Alternator.  Apparently the alternator is not putting out juice after a certain RPM.  Therefore, replacement may be in order.

I've seen this happen on cars where the alternator fan belt was not tight enough. If you have a serpentine belt, all bets are off.

The alternator was putting out 13.6 one day and 6.1 the next day when it went bad. So it wound up being an alternator replacement. The "batt" light was an indication that it was failing. Thanks for the suggestions

No problem.  Those suckers go bad because they are first off, electrical.  And secondly because they are mechanical.  They wear out.  Glad you got her fixed.
