Hi. My sister has a 1996 MUSTANG GT V8 4.6 281. It failed emissions.  The technician indicated a "P0174 OBD-II Trouble Code...System Too Lean (Bank 2)". What does this mean? What might cause this problem?  What might be required to fix the problem? How much might it cost to repair?

Thank you,
Tom

Hello!

I am new to the site, but I have some mustang experience.  I think that bank 2 is the passenger side of the car, and it is the 02 sensor that is bad.  02 sensors are usually around 80-100 bucks.  I have changed one in my z28 and can be a pain to change.  On a stang, it should not be to hard to change, you may need a 02 wrench ( autozone) may have one.  Also, ask autozone to look up to see if it is your front o2 or rear.

You may need to purchase a book it will tell you want the codes are and what the mean.  Google.com is also a good source.

It could be other things, but the 02 sensor is a good start.  Sometimes from my experience, if you fix one problem, another rises.  I have other things going thru my mind, but start with the o2.

Good luck!

Rich
